Scientific Research programs

Scientific research plays an important role in the activity of the University. It is carried out at different levels: department, faculty, university or even by co-operation between an internal body and experimental farms outside our University.
The topics of basic and applied research are numerous and varied due to the specific nature of the faculties and of the research teams working within the faculties or departments. At the Faculty of Agronomy, multi-disciplinary teams conduct research on improving crop technologies for the main plants cultivated on brown-reddish soil, under conditions of reduced soil pollution and lower material and energy consumption. Complex studies on the suitability and best ways pesticides use and on the effects of these substances on the trophic chain have been made. Scientists study the possibilities of developing new varieties of some crop plants; the following varieties and hybrids have been homologated: the Ilfov Soya, several corn hybrids, bean lines, rape lines, medical herb lines, etc. Using radioactive isotopes, fundamental research on some aspects of plant mineral nutrition has been done. Electron-microscopic research, as well as studies on rural economics, on agricultural production organization and improvement (with special emphasis on specific areas, main crops, etc.) has been also carried out.
At the Faculty of Horticulture, the range of research work includes technologies of growing horticultural crops in the field and in protected areas, flower and vegetable breeding and development of new varieties and hybrids. Many new varieties have been developed: "Export 2", "Sincron", "Vitamina" - for tomatoes, "Augusta" - grapes, "Aniversare", "Start", "Rubin", "Raza de Soare" - flowers. More-over, the flora of the Danube Delta, as well as the industrial use of tinctorial plants and of in vitro cell and tissue cultures for plant breeding purposes have been studied.

At the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, a special interest in developing productive animal lines and hybrids and improving the breeding technologies has been shown. The results may be seen in goose hybrids for "foie gras", sheep and pig lines, the Romanian "Semigreu" horse breed, a Romanian "Balata" cattle line etc. Basic research is conducted on perfecting the techniques of semen conservation on various species, studies on ovules-genesis, the effect of ionization on animals etc.
At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, clinical and pharmacy dynamic studies on new pharmaceutical products used against a number of surgical, obstetrical, parasitic and microbial diseases have been done. New vaccines have been created, such as: the inactivated vaccine against pig infectious pleuropneomonia, the vaccine against listriosis on sheep, the vaccine against aviary cholera etc. Research on several microbial enzymes used in the food industry has also been done.
At the same time, morphological studies on some diseases prevailing in animal breed.
